Day 10-- Favorite Candy

I know this is a day late. So sorry! I'm just not always able to do a drawing, photograph it, and get it uploaded on the blog. Life's busy. :) Hopefully I'll get today's drawing up tonight.

I couldn't pick a favorite candy. Can you tell? I just drew all of them! Taffy and truffles and peppermint sticks and rock candy and Reeses and Three Musketeers... Plus lots of old-fashioned candy-store goodness.

This drawing is incomplete. I can't make up my mind whether to use colored pencil or watercolors... so I'm going to leave it up to you, dear blog readers! Leave a comment-- I'll do the one with the most votes. (It beats doing eeenie meeenie minie moe)

Day 9: Favorite TV Show

Well, it ain't called a challenge for nothing, folks. I almost didn't get this one done on time!

This is supposed to be Charlie Eppes from Numb3rs. I knew I should have tried sketching a good drawing before attacking the paper with markers. Also, excuse the photo, it was taken by my desk lamp's yellow, yellow light.

Day 8: Favorite Animated Character

So... Larry the Cucumber isn't exactly my favorite animated character (PIXAR!) but I wanted something easy to draw. And something I could draw from memory.

And you can't beat a vegetable riding a unicycle.

I mean, seriously, nothing beats a unicycle.

(This is based on the intro scene in Veggie Tales: Lord of the Beans. Veggie Tales are awesome-- no, I don't care that they are kids movies, and neither should you-- Veggie Tales are awesome and nothing beats a Lord of the Rings spoof with a unicycle in it.)

Day 7: Draw Your Favorite Word



GRANDILOQUENT

I'm starting to be pleased with my typography (I don't know if you'd call this kind of drawing-of-words calligraphy?). I even looked up how to properly draw/grid the Roman Capitals. I never realized there was so much geometry in it!

Despite the fact that I'm the mutant of my family (being an artist and all), my little heart still sighs with pleasure when I learn about things like this.

Actually, this mutant is losing her mind... do you know, I'm actually enjoying my trignometry book?

It's only because trignometry is really geometry is disguise.

And geometry is cool, as far as math things go.

But I still hate algebra.

And arithmetic.



People keep trying to tell me that this isn't a word. BUT IT IS!

(Kudos to anyone who can guess what logo's font I tried to emulate for this. Hint: the logo is related to the only other "person" I know who uses ish in everyday conversation.)

Oh, yeah, I love irony.

Day 6: Favorite Book Character

It goes without saying that I am an avid bookworm. Yet today's challenge ("draw a favorite book character-- can't be from a movie") took some thinking; almost all of my favorite characters are in books that have been movie-fied. Even Rose Brier from The Shadow of the Bear and the rest of the Fairy Tale Novels Retold series.

I wanted to choose a book that actually meant a great deal to me; I wanted to choose a character who remained bright in my memory.

I read The Great Good Thing back in second or third grade, and have come back to it from time to time. It's a lovely story about-- well, I don't want to give too much away, but it's about book characters who live outside of their story. It's pretty deep, too...

The drawing is based off of one scene when the book is on fire and the princess Sylvie leads the other characters out of the book, across an ocean, and into the Reader's mind. Half of it is drawn with words (my favorite lines from the book), not ordinary lines. :)

It was partially based off of the book's cover image:

I'm kind of loving this new technique-- I finally bought some India ink and cleaned out my calligraphy pen nibs. I love fountain pens dipped in bottles of ink. :) Using words as lines is difficult but fun. I want to try this again sometime, when I have more time and am working on something larger than 4 by 6 inches!

P.P.S. I just found out that there is a trilogy based on this book. Now I'm curious. Next time we're at the library, I'm headed towards the children's/juvenile section...

Day 4 and Day 5

I didn't forget about the drawing challenge. I didn't even get a day behind.

I just had some technical difficulties (read: I lost my camera). These issues are now resolved (read: I found my camera under a book).

Day 4: Favorite Place

My favorite place to read is on the hammock swing in our backyard. The view is gorgeous-- the pond, the forest, the little insects that eat me alive...

Drawn with pastel. 20 minutes. (Guess who needs work with pastel?)

I started out with a different drawing, in colored pencil. I was going to have a flowery description and everything... it's a drawing of a backyard. When you are a kid, a backyard is never a backyard. It's a castle's field, a dragon's lair, a futuristic city, but never, never a boring backyard.

Then I realized that the backyard I was drawing doesn't look like any of our old backyards, and I can't seem to draw trees with colored pencil, and so I gave up halfways through and drew the hammock instead. Neither drawing is particularly good...

I think it's safe to say that yesterday's challenge didn't like me.

Day 5: Best friend

I have too many close friends to choose just one to draw a picture of.

So I drew a picture of what I did with my "besties" during grade school.

I used to know some epic jump rope tricks, but never learned to do the double-dutch.

Drawn with guache (goopy guache-- I had to stop painting for an hour, and when I got back, the paint was all goopy!), somewhere around half an hour.

Day 3: Favorite Food

Ice cream sundaes are a legitimate food.

Even if the whipped cream looks wonky.

(I did mention that not all my drawings are going to be as fancy as yesterday's phoenix, didn't I? I've been busy working on Ink and Fairydust!)

My little sister drew my second favorite food: pizza. She actually drew one of our Zipper Parties.

Explanation: When I was little, my parents knew never to say "Let's order pizza." aloud. My brothers and I would go ballistics. We'd even made a Pizza Song (that consisted of shouting "PIZZA!" in a singsong voice) and a Pizza-in-the-Oven game (that consisted of running in circles around the kid who was the pizza, and then attacking and pretending to eat him).

Mom and Dad tried to outsmart us. They started to speak in code: "Let's get p-i-z-z-a."

They forgot that I was learning to read.

Eventually, "p-i-z-z-a" morphed into "a-z-z-i-p" (pizza backwards). It stayed like that for a long time, until one of my brothers realized Hey! A-z-z-i-p spells azip!

As you can image, azip quickly turned to azzipper, which shrunk to zipper.

Nowadays. the only pizza that is allowed to be called Zipper is our own speality homemade pizza with creative and yummy toppings. We often have families over for "Trash Pizza/ Zipper" parties. Each family brings over some pizza trays and unusual toppings, and then everyone sets to work creating zipper masterpieces.
