5th Day of Christmas-- The Velvet Heart: Jewelry Giveaway

Keys have been a big jewelry trend lately; a trend that I love. Keys mean so much, especially old fashioned ones with long-kept secrets, rusty ones whose locks have been forgotten, or newer keys with sentimental attachments. And just keys in general are so pretty.

Especially when they are paired with bright and colorful flowers and other decorations!
The Velvet Heart is giving away this beautiful key necklace!

A vintage enamel stacked flower in pink, yellow and blue has been wire wrapped to an upcycled uncut brass key. An antiqued brass leaf charm has been added. All are strung from a 20 inch antiqued brass chain with lobster clasp. The key measures 2 1/4 inches long....

The Velvet Heart is a lovely shop full of handmade goodies. Almost every item features upcycled things such as vintage fabric, buttons, etc, fashioning them into lovely jewelry and accessories!

4th Day of Christmas-- Cleirigh: Bobby Pin Giveaway

On this fourth day of Christmas, I'm happy to present Cleirigh, a lovely Etsy shop run by a mother of two. She makes polymer clay figures, accessories, and jewelry. And... bobby pins!

I love these yummy bobby pins... (some of my favorite shades of my favorite colors!). They would be gorgeous in any hairstyle, but I would totally do some vintage curls and match it with a bright, full-skirted dress (I wish!). But I disgress, as usual. I'll let the maker of these bobby pins describe them:
These bright vintage button bobby pins are handmade of red, dark green and light green polymer clay with unique mother of pearl vintage buttons in the centers. Make the season even more jolly and add these for a touch of Christmas color to any outfit! The decorated part of the pin measures 3/4 of an inch and the pin itself measures 2 1/4 inches long.

Enter to win these bobby pins by Cleirigh!

Also, be sure to visit her shop. So many goodies... I thought it would be appropriate, since it is the Christmas season, to share this handmade Nativity set that was under her recently sold items:

What Child is this who, laid to rest
On Mary's lap is sleeping?

While shepherds watch are keeping?

It's always a good thing to remember the reason for the season (however over-used that saying may be!)
Today's giveaway is from Axis Mundi Jewelry. They sell beautiful handmade religious jewelry.

Be sure to check out their shop... Below are a couple of my favorites!

2nd Day of Christmas-- Le Belle Madeline Giveaway

EDIT: This giveaway is also available for anyone living in Italy (not just the US.) My mistake. :)

Nothing could be a better combination than a mug of tea (or coffee or hot coca), a good book, and a long afternoon.

(Tea! Tea not only goes with good books; it makes studying and exams infinitely better. I know. I discovered this just a couple weeks ago. Chai tea, peppermint tea, pomegrante tea...)

Do you know what makes a mug of tea even better?

A darling mug cosy.

Luisa of Le Belle Madeline crochets the darlingest mug cozies you'll ever see.

She also makes crocheted bags and other goodies.

And she is giving one of you lucky readers a chance to win her cute Bug on a Mug cozy! (top photo, and below)

It's got a little ladybug among the clouds... so pretty. :) What a perfect way to cheer up these dreary winter days! What book and drink would you most like to snuggle up with right now?

Be sure to visit her shop and check out her other goodies!

1st Day of Christmas-- Evenstar Giveaway-- GIVEAWAY CLOSED

Merry Christmas!

Christmas has begun! I had a wonderful time celebrating with family. And I'm pleased to announce that the 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway Extravaganza starts right now!

Each of the next 12 days will feature a giveaway from various artists, artisans, and crafters. There are some truly lovely shops giving away some stunning items. I really wish that all of you could win! :)

Scroll down for the first giveaways!

________________________________

Some notes about the giveaways (sorry for the wordiness but it is important):

All the giveaways will close on Jan 10th and the winners will be announced the next day.

If you haven't participated in giveaways before, here's a sample entry to show you how it works:

"My favorite item from Shealynn's Faerie Shoppe is the sapphire Evenstar necklace! I already follow Shealynn on facebook and blogger. I tweeted about this giveaway (link). Total entries: 5.
-RandomPerson123, contact: randomperson123@sampleemail.com"

Note that you only need to leave one comment per giveaway.

If you are uncomfortable doing so, you do not have to leave your email in your entry comments. However, this means that you are responsible for checking the blog on Jan 11th to see if you won. If I do not hear back from the winners by Jan 16th, new ones will be chosen!

Some people have been having difficulties leaving comments on Blogger. This is usually due to a problem with cookies. Blogger requires cookies (small bits of information) to be left on your computer in order for you to leave a comment, and some browsers block these cookies. A temporary fix for Blogger users experiencing this problem is to log out and log back in-- but be sure that the "stay logged in" button is unchecked. If you have difficulties leaving comments, please email me at shealynnsfaerieshoppe@gmail.com and I will be happy to help you!

I will not be on the computer a great deal during the 12 days of Christmas-- just enough for email and Shoppe orders. During this time I will temporarily set all comments to "automatic" and won't see and moderate each one before it is published. If you need to contact me for anything immediate, please email rather than leave a comment.

The first giveaway is from me, myself, and I!

I'd love to kickstart the giveaway extravaganza with one of my most popular designs:

The Evenstar Jewelry Set!

In the Lord of the Rings (my favorite story every), Aragorn and the elf Arwen Undomiel fell in love. Arwen chose to forsake her elven immortality in order to become Aragorn's wife and queen.

I love this scene from The Fellowship of the Ring, where Frodo first sees Arwen. He had just arrived at Rivendell and was full of awe at the elves, yet Arwen made him wonder even more.

In the middle of the table, against the woven cloths upon the wall, there was a chair under a canopy, and there sat a lady fair to look upon, and so like was she in form of womanhood to Elrond that Frodo guessed that she was one of his close kindred. Young she was and yet not so. The braids of her dark hair were touched by no frost, her white arms and clear face were flawless and smooth, and the light of stars was in her bright eyes, grey as a cloudless night; yet queenly she looked, and thought and knowledge were in her glance, as of one who has known many things that the years bring. Above her brow her head was covered with a cap of silver lace netted with small gems, glittering white; but her soft grey raiment had no ornament save a girdle of leaves wrought in silver.

So it was that Frodo saw her whom few mortals had yet seen; Arwen, daughter of Elrond, in whom it was said that the likeness of Lúthien had come on earth again; and she was called Undómiel, for she was the Evenstar of her people.

Near Elrond sat the Lady Arwen. To his surprise Frodo saw that Aragorn stood beside her; his dark cloak was thrown back, and he seemed to be clad in elven-mail, and a star shone on his breast.

Sorry. I'm fond of long passages. :)

Arwen was the Evenstar, or Evening Star, of her people. (She was compared to Beren and Luthien, another mortal/elf couple whose story J.R.R. Tolkien set to a beautiful poem.) Her role in The Lord of the Rings was quite small, and her story was briefly told in the Appendices.

In the LotR movies, however, Arwen was given a much larger role. One of the movie additions was Arwen's gift of a necklace to Aragorn. This Evenstar necklace symbolized that she was giving him her love and choosing the mortal path.

Evenstar movie prop replica image from the Noble Collection

As I started making jewelry, I knew I had to do an elven-style necklace. I'm absolutely in love with the elven aethetic. But Arwen's perfectly metalsmithed necklace is far beyond both my tools and my current abilities....

My unique Evenstar design is inspired by Arwen's ethereal jewel. Each one is handcrafted from Czech glass, pearls, and intricately wrapped wire.

I've paired the necklaces with my second-most-popular design: the Enchanted Forest Earrings.

You can see lots of variations on these designs over at my photo gallery.

One of YOU lucky readers will win an entire Evenstar Jewelry Set, in your choice of colors!

I'm only giving away colors that I have in stock, but I feel that there are plenty of choices...
You also get the choice of silver plate, gold plate, or clip-on earwires! The necklace will come on a 16" chain.

The Light of Erendil-- Evenstar Set in Sapphire Blue. (I feel like being creative with titles right now. Fellow geeks, geek out! :) Erendil was the most beloved star of the Elves, and Galadriel gave its light to Frodo as a help to him in dark places.)

Mirkwood Reversible Evenstar Set. Mirkwood was an elven forest wherein dwelt Galadriel and other sylvan elves. This set is deliciously sylvan and silvery. Shiny green on one side, silver on the other.

Twilight Evenstar Set. Not related to vampires. It's just a pretty dark purple...

Midnight Reversible Evenstar Set. It's a deep, dark blue on one side and starlight-shiny-blue on the other. Perhaps it's even more twilight than the previous purple one, but I can't go calling two sets by the same name, now can I?

Mermaid Evenstar Set. It's a bit of a variation on the usual Evenstar. Really I shouldn't be calling it a Mermaid set... because I don't think that there are mermaids in Middle Earth, or even all of Arda.
So perhaps I will call it the Seaside Evenstar Set. Because as all Tolkienites know, the Elves have a special longing for the sea.
But for those not so interested in Tolkien but just interested in pretty fairytale jewelry... I'll call it the Mermaid Evenstar. :)

Shadows of Gold Evenstar Set. Dark brown. And gold.

Pixie Dust Evenstar Set. I seriously doubt that there are pixies in Middle Earth. But what else shall I call a pretty, sparkly, cotton candy pink Evenstar?

Rivendell Reversible Evenstar Set. The iridscent green, gold, and pink beads remind me so much of the rich colors of the elven home... and the other side is a foresty green!

Merry Christmas!

I'm having more fun destroying more books!
(Only books that deserve it, of course. The one I cut up for this project was a Reader's Digest super-abridged story-of-the-year book that looked like it had been on the Salvation Army's shelf for many years.)

I'm also having fun teaching myself how to use Photoshop.

And I'm having fun doing stop-frame animations. Although I've worked on many little animations with my brothers, this is the first one that I've actually done to completion:

*crosses fingers and hopes that the majorly giant GIF file works on everyone's computers*

Photobucket

My second and favorite one:

Photobucket

And if you are having difficulties seeing the GIFs, I turned one of the animations into a video and uploaded it to YouTube:

O Tannenbaum

I am finally on Christmas break-- that glorious time with no school and nothing to do but enjoy time with your family (and spend any leftover time doing artwork!).

I'm looking forward to Mass tommorrow night and then our tradition of eating pizza, baking Santa cookies, and reading The Night Before Christmas (and each year it gets harder and harder to fit all 8 of us on one single couch for Dad to read us that book!). This year my littest brother is old enough to understand what Christmas is all about-- he was so cute this morning when he said that Jesus was even smaller than he is!-- and he's also sooo excited about the presents.

Anyway, I made you all a pretty little Christmas tree. :)

I can't take credit for this idea; I'd seen a photo with a tree made out of stacked up books online a couple of months ago-- maybe on Pinterest? I can't find it now, though.
(part of my destroyable books series... only this one didn't destroy any books except the couple of pages used to make the bow/star. You'll be seeing a tutorial on that very soon.)

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

A Plan for Joy

I'm very excited to announce that a very big project I have been working on is completed and published!

A Plan for Joy in the Home: A Workbook on Organizing Your Day for Homeschooling Mothers is a wonderful workbook written by Laura Dominick that does exactly what the title says-- it gives awesome tips for homeschool parents. It's available for sale here.

A few months ago, Mrs. Dominick asked if I could do layout for a book that she wrote. I'd met her briefly this summer at the ReginaoCon and had a blast with her daughters.

Of course I said yes!

However, I had no idea how to go about doing graphic design for a book. I've worked on the online magazine Ink and Fairydust, but that is a little different. A book provides a whole new world of publication requirements. For instance, I had no idea how to do chapter pagination or how to add correct page numbering.

Mrs. Dominick was very gracious and understanding as I researched and learned about this brand-new world. Very understanding-- not only was I trying to do this from scratch and make it professional, but I was also plauged with major computer problems that put me behind schedule!

I was so excited to recieve the email with her draft. As I mentioned before, the workbook is really helpful (although I think that I don't really appreciate it fully-- I'm only a homeschool student, after all! And yet it seemed really wonderful to me.) Mrs. Dominick shares various plans for organizing the day, and provides plenty of real-life ideas that her family uses.

In addition to the graphic layout, I also did illustrations for each chapter. The image below is from the last chapter.

She also asked me to do the front cover illustration. It was a challenging and invigorating artistic challenge, and I'm very happy that she was pleased with it! The drawing was loosly based off a photo of her family. I changed some details, added lots of warm coloring, and made the family more cartoony to fit in with the style of the illustrations.
(For those of you who, like me, appreciate these sorts of details, it was done with black pen and Prismacolor colored pencils on Bristol board. I burnished the prismacolors with a wax pencil finish... which made the second layer of pen lines hard to apply! The title was added with InDesign).

This has been a wonderful experience for me... I've learned so much, so many skills that will be useful in the future. And my work is being published... Yup, pretty excited about that. I'd love to take this chance to say THANK YOU to Mrs. Dominick for allowing me to be a part of this project!

A Plan for Joy in the Home is available both as a PDF download and as a printed book from HERE. Please visit the website!

Mrs. Dominick talks more about the workbook on her blog: HERE. And you can read her far-too-kind comments about working on it here.

Giveaways!

I'm excited to announce an event happening here at the blog during the 12 days following Christmas!

Over the past few months, as the blog has surprisingly grown (like, alot, it's quite a blessing and exciting!), I've been approached by a couple of people wanting to do giveaways here. I hesitated, because I'd prefer people to visit the blog because of the content, not because of how many freebies there are.

However, I think it would be really neat to do a 12 Days of Christmas giveaway extravaganza! It also strikes me as funny, how we start decorating for Christmas before... well, sometimes even before Halloween. And yet, people are ready to take down their Christmas trees on December 26th. The Christmas season (if we are going to be particular) starts on Christmas and lasts much longer.

So I'm going to be bringing some holiday cheer to you in the 12 days after Christmas!

I've written to several handmade artists and designers who have very graciously offered to give away some of their beautiful creations here on the blog.
I'll also be giving away a few items (and not just the jewelry you usually see in the Faerie Shoppe).

There are still a few days with no giveaways, though.
If you run a small handmade business or would like to make something to give away, please contact me at Shealynnsfaerieshoppe{at}gmail.com

(just remove {at} and replace it with @, I'm trying to avoid spam. Thanks!)

Also, I just changed the blog header. Now the fairy is actually sitting on something, rather than floating around and sitting in midair. Hopefully the new design also solves some problems a couple people mentioned about viewing the page. Let me know what you think! :)

Saint Swap

This November my little sister and I participated in a saint ATC swap!

A.T.C. stands for Artist Trading Cards, and they are basically trading-size cards that you make small peices of art on.

The swap was hosted by the lovely blog Pondered in My Heart. Each participant made five pieces of art and mailed it to the family hosting the event. They swaped cards according to age and mailed them back.

(Next year I'm going to convince my brothers to participate!)
We recently recieved an envelope in the mail... with our trading cards in it! I just couldn't wait to share them with you all. :)

I recieved these drawings. They are all so beautiful...
(left top to right) St. Charles Borromeo by Margaret, St. Therese by Anna, Our Lady of Grace by Rosemary, St. Catherine of Siena by Mary, and St. Victor by Lydia.

My little sister recieved these cute drawings.

Jesus by Teresa, St. Elizabeth of Hungary by Katie, St. Lucy by Elizabeth, St. Francis by Katie, St. Catherine by Catherine.

-------------------------

Here's the drawings we sent out in the swap!

My little sister drew five of the same picture of St. Therese the Little Flower.

These are my drawings. I had a lot of fun researching the saints and discovering the items that they are usually pictured with in religious artwork. And I had lots of fun researching the clothing worn by 7th century Celts. (Don't you love getting sidetracked?)

St. Dymphna (7th century Celtic martyr for purity), St. Adelheid (princess of Burgundy), St. Maximillian Kolbe (martyr in WWII concentration camp), St. Thomas Aquinas (great theologian, my Confirmation patron saint), and St. Madeline Sophie Barat.

A Pretty Package in the Mail-- Shipping Tips

I always love getting mail. Letters are the best, of course-- loving letters from friends and family-- and so are handmade cards and lovely magazines. There is always such a thrill in recieving something just for you. It's magical.

This is one of the reasons why I love to make all my packages be pretty. These are a few of my favorite things... I don't use much brown paper, but I do use lots of string!

I recently had several orders from the Shoppe and photographed my "shipping process." I've had several queries from fellow handmade artists concerning shipping... I certainly don't have all the answers, and since my Shoppe is small and I don't have a lot of money, I haven't done several things that are good ideas for business shipping (someday I would love to get gift boxes and stylized packaging!).

However, every order is shipped with love and care, and hopefully makes the reciever smile. So, for what it's worth, this is the way that I've been shipping items lately!

The first and most time-consuming step is making little jewelry bags. I use scrap fabric from old sewing projects (thank you to several friends who gave me their scraps!) and some beautiful fat quarters I found on sale.

Each one is cut to size to fit my plastic baggies (see below). This batch that I sewed up in November used several "Christmas-y" fabrics.

Sometimes if I'm in a hurry I don't fold over a hem on the top of the bags. It's still pretty that way.

Tip for anyone wanting to use this idea: Sew the bags in batches. It's much faster and less stressful.

I don't always use fabric baggies. Sometimes I use brown paper tied up with pretty ribbon, or peices of a wedding tablecloth (also tied up with pretty ribbon!).

The jewelry goes onto cards (printed on cardstock with holepunches for earrings and slits for necklaces). These cards are then slid into the fabric bags.

I have two sizes of cards, baggies, and bags to accomodate most peices of jewelry.

Isn't it pretty?

Each item gets its own baggie, and I usually put up to three baggies in each fabric bag (or brown paper package).

My business card also goes into the bag. Right now I'm printing them on cardstock and cutting it out with a paper slicer, but someday I intend to get some professionally printed.

The reciept and fabric bag slide into a padded envelope.

Right now I have some lovely brown envelopes that I quickly stamp on.

Unfortunately I'm running out of the pretty envelopes and will soon have to go back to the boring manilla ones.

I ship everything via USPS First Class mail with delivery confirmation (unless I'm asked to ship with other specifications). I print postage from Paypal, which is really nice because I never have to drive out to the post office.

Larger items get shipped Priority Mail.

In this photo you can see the "wedding tablecloth" that I cut up and tie with string or ribbon.

Did I mention that it's an absurdly large roll of wedding tablecloth? Mom found it at a resale store for me!

It's pretty and swirly. :)

Anyways, after the package is sealed and the postage is taped on...

I put the packge in the mailbox and imagine the smile on the person recieving it!
